The US Department of Justice intends to launch an antitrust investigation against Facebook Inc after a call from Attorney General William Barr, Bloomberg reports citing a source familiar with the situation.

Earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported citing sources that the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is conducting an antitrust investigation against Facebook to acquire potential competitors.

According to a source, Barr prompted the Justice Ministry to launch an antitrust investigation into Facebook. According to him, the investigation of the Ministry of Justice will be different from that conducted by the FTC.

It is noted that the investigations of the Ministry of Justice and the FTC are in addition to the investigations conducted by the prosecutor general and the judicial committee of the House of Representatives.

In June, the U.S. House Judicial Committee announced it would begin verifying compliance with antitrust laws in digital markets. A number of US media reported that the antitrust investigation will affect technology giants such as Facebook, Amazon, Google and Apple.
