The information was mistakenly sent in an email from the UK Department of Defense.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace has launched an investigation into the leaked email addresses of dozens of Afghan translators who worked for the British military.

More than 250 people, many of whom were in hiding and wanting to move to the UK, were mistakenly sent in an email from the UK Department of Defense. Their email addresses could be seen by all recipients, including names and some associated profile pictures.

The email was sent to translators who stayed in Afghanistan or were able to move to other countries. The DOD then sent another email 30 minutes later titled "Urgent - Arap case contact" asking recipients to delete the previous email and warning "your email address may have been compromised." In writing, translators were encouraged to change their email addresses.

Conservative MP and former Defense Secretary Johnny Mercer told the BBC that the failures of the Defense and Home Office have resulted in Afghan allies being "ruthlessly persecuted by the Taliban."
