Eight Russian banks were attacked by hackers from Brazil, Kommersant reports. As Artem Sychev, First Deputy Director of the Information Security Department of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, explained, a hacker attack on Russian banks from Brazil, the fact of which became known on September 12, took several months.

Attackers figured out the first six digits of the bank card number (BIN) used for identification in payment systems, and tried to generate the remaining funds for debit by brute force. Banks asked the regulator for help.

According to Sychev, Brazilian colleagues solved the problem. There were no financial losses from Russian banks due to the attack.

According to experts, this does not mean that banks were not harmed - attacks related to card exhaustion can lead to significant costs for the acquirer and issuer, as unsuccessful authorizations are also paid according to the tariffs of payment systems. It can be assumed that Russian banks that were victims of cybercriminals had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on commissions.
