And now the company is changing its security policy, the press service of Twitter reports. Users will no longer require a mobile phone number when entering and registering.

The company is changing the approach to authentication. Clients' mobile phones will be deleted from the servers, replacing them with a physical security key as the second authentication factor for their account. Until tomorrow, Twitter users trying to log in only in a secure way can enter their nickname and password, and then ask the site to send them an SMS message to confirm their identity.

Amid growing evidence that hackers can undermine text authentication, Twitter is expanding. The change provides users with more protection against attacks with a change of SIM cards, such as the one that hit CEO Jack Dorsey. Often, hackers can convince mobile phone providers to switch their phone number to a new device that they control. Thanks to the 2FA text protocol, technology companies such as Google, Twitter and others send an SMS message to the attacker, inadvertently giving the hacker the opportunity to penetrate the target account.

Outsiders took Dorsey's account to publish a series of racist texts and threats of terrorism. Prior to this, Twitter said it provided contractors with email addresses and phone numbers used by customers for security. The company said the move was a mistake.
