The National Commission on Information Technology and Human Rights (Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, CNIL) has fined Google 100 million euros for violating the rules on the use of cookies. Tech giant Amazon was also fined, but only 35 million euros.

The supervisor found that the French tech giants' websites did not ask for prior consent from users before the cookies were stored on their computers. Google and Amazon were also unable to provide clear information on how the collected data will be used and how you can opt out of cookies.

According to the commission, most of the fine (60 million euros) of Google is to be paid by the American company Google LLC, and the rest (40 million euros) by the EU-based Google Ireland Limited. Amazon's fine must be paid in full by its Luxembourg subsidiary.

Companies have three months to correct violations of the rules. Otherwise, they face an additional fine of 100 thousand euros per day until they bring their activities in line with the rules.
