Employees of the Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Republic of Mari El have completed an investigation into the criminal case against a 49-year-old resident of the Republic of Tatarstan, accused of stealing money from bank accounts.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a 40-year-old resident of Mari-Turek district with higher technical education and programming skills has assembled a device for stealing funds from someone else's bank cards. Being near the base stations, with the help of the device, a man intercepted and decrypted the data of the cellular network and created a software emulation of the cell phones of the victims. Then, using the technical parameters of other people's SIM cards, the attacker sent commands to transfer money from bank cards tied to them to their electronic accounts.

Trying to avoid initiating a criminal case, the man abducted small amounts. He believed that because of the small amounts the victims would not go to the police, but he was mistaken. As a result, the attacker was detained by police officers with the participation of the Russian Guard. He is charged with committing crimes under paragraph “d” of part 3 of article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Theft from a bank account”).

During the search at the place of residence of the attacker, mobile phones, SIM cards, bank cards and a computer were found and seized. Currently, the criminal case with the indictment approved by the prosecutor has been sent to the court for consideration on the merits.
