Following an international law enforcement operation by US and Cypriot law enforcement agencies, the SSNDOB darknet market was shut down. SSNDOB sold the names, social security numbers, and dates of birth of approximately 24 million US residents.

Four domains hosting the SSNDOB marketplace were confiscated: "ssndob.ws", "ssndob.vip", "ssndob.club", and "blackjob.biz ". SSNDOB consisted of multiple sites acting as mirrors of each other to prevent DDoS attacks or law enforcement operations.

“A series of websites that have been used for years to sell personal information are owned by several individuals. The SSNDOB marketplace hosts the personal information of approximately 24 million people. SSNDOB generated more than $22 million in sales revenue for the attackers,” according to a press release from the Department of Justice.
According to researchers at Advanced Intel, most of the information came from healthcare data breaches. Other attackers then used this information to scam.

“SSNDOB has been one of the largest darknet marketplaces offering the collection of personal information for cybercriminals. Most customers have used store data for various types of fraud from taxes to bank fraud,” said Vitaly Kremez, CEO of AdvIntel.
Chainalysis researchers have speculated that SSNDOB is linked to major carding marketplace Joker's Stash, which closed in February 2021. “Between December 2018 and June 2019, SSNDOB sent over $100,000 worth of bitcoins to Joker's Stash. We speculate that the two markets may have had something to do with each other, including co-ownership,” Chainalysis explained in the report.
