An attacker hacked the servers of companies and used them for crypto jacking. Former Amazon employee Paige Thompson, who was arrested last month for stealing data from banking company Capital One, is now accused of breaking into more than 30 other companies. Thompson, known on the Web as erratic, was arrested by the FBI on July 29 this year for a crime against Capital One, which resulted in the disclosure of personal information to more than 100 million users in the United States and 6 million in Canada. The stolen data included about 140 thousand social security numbers and 80 thousand bank account numbers, as well as names, addresses, dates of birth, credit limits of some customers, balance, payment history and contact information.
Thompson has recently been charged with two more - email fraud and computer fraud. The offender obtained illegal access to data from more than 30 organizations. The indictment did not include company names, but three of the affected organizations were described as "a government agency outside of Washington state, a telecommunications conglomerate outside the US, and a state research university outside of Washington state."
According to the indictment, Thompson created scanning software to spy on users of a cloud computing company. Thanks to incorrectly configured firewalls, the criminal got access to the servers and was able not only to steal user data, but also use the computing power of hacked servers to mine cryptocurrency.
Seattle’s 33-year-old software engineer remains in custody and will appear before the Seattle District Court on September 5. She faces up to 25 years in prison.
