An enterprising resident of North Ossetia, serving his sentence in a penal colony of strict regime, found a way to “earn money” without leaving his own cell. According to the prosecutor’s office of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, the prisoner developed a plan for embezzlement of funds from bank accounts of citizens and with the help of an accomplice successfully implemented it.

Having experience working with the software of one of the commercial banks, the offender gained access to the personal data of customers, including information about their deposits and accounts. The man phoned the bank's customers, introduced himself as his employee and reported that their cards were blocked and some personal data must be provided to continue operations. Thus, he lured victims with bank card information and transaction confirmation codes.

Having acquired the necessary information, the prisoner bought household appliances via the Internet, and then informed the accomplice the location of the store and the promotional code necessary for receiving the goods. The criminals sold the purchased goods, and the proceeds were divided among all participants in the scheme.

Using the above method, attackers were able to steal about 2 million rubles. The victims are residents of Nizhny Novgorod, Yakutsk, Sverdlovsk, Magadan, Irkutsk regions, Sakhalin, the Udmurt Republic and the Jewish Autonomous District.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against the perpetrators under Art.272 (unlawful access to computer information), Art.183 (illegal receipt and disclosure of information constituting commercial, tax or banking secrets) and Art.158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (theft). The prosecutor's office approved the indictment, and the case was sent to the Industrial District Court for examination on the merits.
