Specialists from the Google Threat Analysis Group discovered two unrelated phishing operations aimed at campaigners for US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Biden campaigners sent phishing emails to hackers linked to the Chinese government and Trump to the Iranian government.

According to Shane Huntley, head of the Google Threat Analysis Group, there is no evidence that phishing attacks were successful.

“Trump’s headquarters was informed that foreign attackers had unsuccessfully cracked the technologies used by our staff. We are vigilant about cybersecurity and are not discussing any of our safeguards, ”Trump’s campaign headquarters told CyberScoop.

“From the very beginning of the campaign, we knew that we would be the target for such attacks, and we prepared properly,” Biden’s headquarters said.

The Biden campaign was attacked by the cyber espionage group APT31 (Zirconium). Earlier, its victims were telecommunications and technology companies, as well as non-governmental organizations.

In turn, the staff of the Trump election headquarters was the target of the APT35 (Charming Kitten) group, whose victims are electricity and technology companies, as well as government organizations. In April of this year, she tried to attack the World Health Organization with the help of malicious letters sent allegedly on behalf of the British Broadcasting Corporation and the American Council on Foreign Policy.

What goals the cybercriminals pursued in both cases is unknown. However, as the hacking of the US Democratic Party servers in 2016 shows, attackers might be interested in confidential documents with a view to their further publication.
