On Tuesday, December 10, in one of the social networks the data of 15 million debit cards issued by banks of Iran were published. According to Iranian media reports, the incident is the largest banking leak in Iran’s history.

According to The New York Times, the leak affected customers of three Iranian banks, which in total amounted to one fifth of the total population of Iran. “This is the largest banking fraud in Iran’s history. Millions of Iranians are afraid to find their name on the list of hacked accounts, ”writes Aftab News.

According to Iranian Minister of Information and Telecommunications Mohammad Jawad Azari Jahromi, the leak was caused by a dissatisfied contractor who had access to the data and published it in the public domain for the purpose of extortion. The Minister assured that the banking systems were not hacked, but experts in the field of cybersecurity believe otherwise.

According to experts, the scale of the incident indicates the involvement of government structures that acted to destabilize the economy, and not ordinary cybercriminals who wanted to "profit" at someone else's expense.

More than a year ago, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions against the damaged banks Mellat, Tejarat and Sarmayeh, accusing them of carrying out money transactions on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, recognized by the presidential administration as a terrorist organization.

An incident can adversely affect affected banks in the long run if customers lose confidence in them and withdraw their money. Who is behind the attack and what goals it pursues is currently unknown.
