Attackers gained unauthorized access to the Kawasaki Heavy Industries server in Japan from several overseas offices.
The Japanese corporation Kawasaki Heavy Industries has reported a security incident and possible data breach after attackers gained unauthorized access to its server from several overseas offices.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries is a multinational corporation with over 35,000 employees. The company specializes in the production of heavy equipment, rolling stock and products for the automotive, aerospace and defense industries.
“After a thorough investigation, the company discovered that some information from overseas offices may have been transferred to outside parties. This time, the company did not find evidence of information leakage to the external network, ”- said in a notice to Kawasaki Heavy Industries.
The company also said that following the discovery of the breach, it took steps to track down and restrict access to its Japanese servers from overseas offices.
In the period from June 11 to July 8 this year, Kawasaki Heavy Industries learned that attackers gained access to a corporate server in Japan from offices in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Communication between the servers was disabled immediately after the incident was detected.
“We have expanded operations to monitor access from overseas offices and tightened restrictions to block unauthorized access,” the company said.
The communication channels were restored on November 30 after the imposition of restrictions on network interaction, a security audit of approximately 30 thousand terminals in the company's networks in Japan and Thailand and confirmation of the absence of unauthorized connections to Japanese servers since August. The company said its server was accessed using advanced technology that leaves no trace.
