Cybercriminals want to get hold of information from US military contractors and other sources that possess confidential information.
An unknown group of hackers launched a cyberattack targeting nine organizations, including at least one from the United States, CNN reports.
According to information security services company Palo Alto Networks, hackers have compromised the networks of nine organizations in the defense, energy, health, technology and education sectors. At least one of these organizations is located in the United States.
It is noted that the company's specialists recorded attempts by hackers to gain access to information from US military contractors and other sources with confidential information.
Cybercriminals reportedly managed to steal passwords from a number of organizations, giving them long-term access to the respective networks. This allows hackers to intercept sensitive information sent via email or stored on computer systems.
According to Ryan Olson, a spokesman for Palo Alto Networks, the hackers' tactics coincide with those of a well-known group of Chinese cybercriminals. Experts agree that this is the type of cyber espionage that both the current White House administration and the administration of former US President Donald Trump have faced. The investigation was made public to warn other companies that they may also be targeted by cybercriminals.
