The criminals robbed a bank in the UAE worth $ 35 million by forging a voice using artificial intelligence technologies. Using a deepfake voice, the attackers tricked a bank employee into sending them money. The employee himself was confident that he was transferring funds as part of a legitimate business transaction.

As reported in court documents in this case, the incident occurred in January 2020, when the head of one of the bank branches in the UAE (the name of the bank was not disclosed) answered a seemingly ordinary phone call. The caller identified himself as the director of a large company, with whom the head of the bank branch had spoken before. The man did not suspect anything, since the voice of the "director" was no different from the real one. To make it more convincing, the attackers sent him emails on behalf of the company, with the "director" of which the banker was allegedly talking, and its lawyer.

The fraudsters convinced the employee that the company was about to close a major deal worth $ 35 million, and he followed their instructions, starting to transfer funds to the "new" accounts of the fictitious company.

As the investigation showed, the fraudsters used a voice deepfake or the so-called "dipvoice" to forge the voice of the company's director. In total, 17 people were involved in the fraudulent scheme, and the stolen money was transferred to many bank accounts around the world.

This case is already the second known case of using a diplomatic voyage to steal funds. In 2019, the British power company found itself in the same situation. Fraudsters managed to steal $ 220 thousand from the company's accounts, posing as its CEO.
