DeepDotWeb platform operator was sentenced to 97 months in prison. Tal Prihar was sentenced for conspiracy to launder money, according to the US Department of Justice. The man pleaded guilty in March last year.

Owned by Prihar and his partner Michael Phan, the DeepDotWeb (DDW) platform was launched in 2013. The site specialized in publishing dark web news and links to underground marketplaces and redirecting users to their onion addresses. The resource was arrested by the US authorities in 2019.

According to the US Department of Justice, Prihar and Phan made huge profits by advertising marketplaces selling hacking tools, firearms, drugs and stolen data. In particular, they “earned” 8,155 bitcoins, which at that time amounted to about $8.4 million. This money was then transferred to cryptocurrency wallets and traditional bank accounts registered with shell companies.

In April 2021, Prihar admitted his role in the scheme and agreed to pay $8.4 million. Phan is currently in Israel. His extradition case is pending.

The FBI, law enforcement agencies of France and Germany, Europol, the US Internal Revenue Service, the Israel National Police, the UK National Crime Agency, etc., participated in the DDW investigation.
