Two Canadian citizens were sentenced to 24 months in prison and another three years of release under the supervision of the abduction of bitcoins from a resident of Oregon under the guise of technical support for the HitBTC cryptocurrency exchange. This is stated on the website of the US Department of Justice.

From October 2017 to August 2018, the brothers Jagroup Singh Hatkar and Karandjit Singh Hatkar used a Twitter account allegedly on behalf of HitBTC support. They convinced the victim to transmit information, thanks to which they got access to her accounts on HitBTC and the Kraken exchange.

Subsequently, they transferred 23.2 MTC (more than $ 118 thousand at the time of writing) from the victim’s account on HitBTC to Karandjit’s account on the Kraken exchange. He transferred half of the stolen coins to Jagroup's account.

In addition to the prison term, the brothers were obliged to compensate the victim for more than $ 184 thousand of damage and pay an additional fine of $ 42 thousand.

Recall, scammers pleaded guilty in December last year.
