The British Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into Barclays bank on suspicion that the financial organization was monitoring employees using software, The Daily Telegraph reported.

According to the newspaper, Barclays management used production monitoring software from Sapience Analytics to track how much time employees spend away from the workplace and how much time they spend on tasks.

The program has been used for 18 months to analyze anonymous data on staff performance, but in February of this year, an additional function appeared in the software that allows management to track individual employees.

After information about this practice was leaked to the press, the bank announced that it was refusing to collect personalized data and would only analyze anonymous data.

According to an ICO spokesman, the agency is indeed investigating Barclays.

“People expect to have a right to privacy and can expect to have some degree of privacy in the workplace. If organizations want to monitor their employees, they must clearly define the purpose for this and be confident that it will bring real benefits. Organizations must also notify employees of the nature, scope and grounds for any monitoring, ”the ICO noted.
