The federal court for the Northern District of California sentenced Russian citizen Yevgeny Nikulin, accused in the United States of cybercrimes, to 88 months in prison (approximately 7 years and 4 months). The prosecutor's office recommended that Nikulin be sentenced to 12 years in prison.

In July of this year, Nikulin was found guilty of hacking into LinkedIn and Formspring in 2012, during which he stole the credentials of 117 million Americans. The Russian was detained in Prague in 2016 at the request of the American authorities, and extradited in 2018in USA. He was charged with fraud, including computer tampering and identity theft.

After serving his sentence, Nikulin is likely to be deported to Russia, Judge William Alsup said. The four years already served will be credited. Nikulin himself refused the opportunity to speak in his defense before the announcement of the verdict.
