A new type of deepfake fraud is rampant in India, according to The Times of India.
Women from fake accounts contact men on social networks, and then make video calls, communicate with the user and perform sexual acts. After such a conversation, the men receive threats to send the recorded video to the acquaintances and relatives of the victim, if he does not transfer a certain amount to the account of the blackmailers. And if real women used to participate in such a scheme, now scammers use deepfake, as well as text-to-sound technology, which helps in creating the speech of fake girls on video.
Some of the victims of the scammers transfer large sums of money, which reach millions of rupees, and some are not carried out on provocations.
On July 2, 33-year-old Rohan Bhasin received a friendship request from a woman on Instagram. “I often meet people and therefore I don’t remember many. Since the woman who sent the request was also friends with my Instagram followers, I added her, ”Bhasin explained.
The woman sent personal messages to Bhasin asking him to provide his number on WhatsApp. “I didn’t give the number because I didn’t know her personally. However, after a few minutes, she started making video calls on Instagram. At first I ignored the calls, but after seven or eight calls I still answered, ”he said.
“On the other side of the screen, there was a naked woman committing indecent acts. It took me about 15 seconds to figure out what was going on. And then I turned off the call, ”he said.
After that, Rohan Bhasin received several messages threatening to publish a video with his participation. The man replied that a member of the scam can publish anything, after which he blocked her account. After 15 minutes, friends and relatives began to call him, asking about a certain video. “The scammers took a picture of my face from a video call I had with them and put it on someone else's body. In the video they shared, it seems like I'm talking about sexual topics, ”Bhasin said.
The scammers were ultimately identified by Indian police, and cybersecurity experts urged residents not to respond to video calls from strangers.
