Visiting fake sites results in the installation of malware and adware on the victim's device.

The specialists of the information security company Bolster talked about how cybercriminals use the typosquatting technique to create domain names disguised as the popular Rarible trading platform for the sale of NFT tokens (Non-Fungible Token). Visiting such sites leads to the installation of malware on the victim's device.

NFT (non-fungible token) is something like a new type of cryptocurrency that exists exclusively in its cryptosystem. In fact, this is a special form of digital art ownership, secured by a unique token. The owner of the token becomes the sole owner of a certain digital object - be it a picture, GIF, video, post on Twitter or a song.

For the most part, search engines do a good job of hiding fraudulent misspelled domains from search results. However, attackers often use WhatsApp and Telegram messenger messages, direct messages on social networks, or even advertisements to distribute a fake domain.

For example, experts found the domain wwwrarible [.] Com, which lacks a dot between www and rarible. When visitors mistakenly click on a given domain's URL, they are taken to a website offering to install a fake Firefox update. One of the browser extensions injects ads on the sites visited by the user and monitors Internet activity.

Other domains redirect visitors to various fraudulent resources, including gambling, fake dating sites designed to steal data, and fake tech support pages. In one case, an adware package installed a cryptocurrency miner on a specialist test device.

According to experts, scammers will continue to enjoy the growing popularity of NFT, creating fake trading platforms for the sale of NFT and distribution of tokens

Typosquatting - registration of domain names similar in spelling to the addresses of popular sites, counting on the error of some users.
