Two Romanian citizens Bogdan Nicolescu and Radu Miclaus were sentenced to prison for developing and operating Bayrob malware, infecting more than 400 thousand computers, and also stealing credit card information and other confidential information.
Nicolescu and Miklaus, together with accomplices, founded a criminal enterprise called the Bayrob Group in 2007. Cybercriminals developed Bayrob malware and distributed it via phishing emails on behalf of well-known companies and organizations, such as Western Union, Norton, and the United States Internal Revenue Service.
The Bayrob malware was designed to steal email addresses from a target computer and then send malicious messages to users. In total, criminals managed to infect and hack more than 400 thousand computers (mainly in the USA). Attackers have registered more than 100 thousand email accounts to send tens of millions of malicious emails to the collected addresses. In addition, they intercepted requests to Facebook, PayPal, eBay and other websites and redirected victims to similar domains in order to steal their credentials.
The defendants also abused the computing power of infected computers for cryptocurrency mining. They sold the stolen information on online trading floors in the dark.

Attackers were charged in December 2016. Nicolescu was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and Miklaus to 18 years.
