Researchers analyzed a massive leak involving 3.28 billion passwords and 2.28 billion email addresses and found more than 1.5 million passwords associated with government emails.

The majority of compromised public sector email addresses belong to the US authorities (625,505), followed by the UK (205,099), Australia (136,025), Brazil (68,535) and Canada (50,726).

We are talking about a 100 GB database called "COMB21" (Compilation of Many Breaches). As the name suggests, this is a collection of data from various leaks. In February, some "well-wishers" posted the database for free on one of the forums for cybercriminals.

Experts emphasize that the presence of public sector data in the public domain does not mean that the state systems themselves have been compromised. Attackers were able to obtain passwords thanks to cracking hashes, and earlier credentials fell into the hands of criminals after phishing attacks, cyber espionage, and thanks to unsecured connections.

The leakage across the American public sector was as follows:

  • state.gov (29 144);
  • va.gov (28 937);
  • dhs.gov (21 575);
  • nasa.gov (15 665);
  • irs.gov (10 480);
  • cdc.gov (8 904);
  • usdoj.gov (8 857);
  • ssa.gov (8 747);
  • usps.gov (8 205);
  • epa.gov (7 986).
